Well, another day of needless overeating on everyone’s part has come and passed and now we have the biggest holiday of the year to look forward to… CHRISTMAS! I’m seventeen now, and in reality this will probably be both the last Christmas where I don’t have to spend any money or buy anyone anything and it will also be my last Christmas where I receive a huge gift. This year, as I did last year, I asked my parents for a Mac Mini. I love my gaming computer that I built back in June and it shits on the Mac Mini in terms of specifications, but I have grown over the years to despise Windows. And I mean despise it. I began back on Windows XP in the year of its release and over the years have progressed on from that, to Vista(where my hate began to manifest itself and where I also discovered the beauty of Apples products) and now on to Windows 7. Not only is Apples operating system a beautiful thing, but their hardware… oh god their hardware is just downright sexy.
I think my love really manifested when last year, the day before the start of my junior year, my mother was talking to her friend on facebook who just happened to be a vice principal at my high school. She asked my mother if we owned any Macs and if I had any experience with them (since I had recently began to take an extreme interest in computers my mother had been spamming her facebook with my latest Linux and hardware endeavors I’m assuming). Well, we had never owned one and my last experience with one was in seventh grade in our technology/wood-shop room. She offered up her old eMac G4 for free, on the grounds we get to the school early in the morning so that we could pick it up before her meeting. My mom, who sits behind me on the couch with her laptop, said: “Hey, Mike, would you like one of those Apple Com-” That was as far as she got basically before I blurted out “YES!”
And thus we picked up my first Mac. I arrived home and set the fifty-pound behemoth down on my desk in the spot I had cleared and wired it up. My first impression was one of sheer jubilation. ONE WIRE. ONE-FUCKING-WIRE to power a CRT-display and an entire computer! I was worried the bloody thing wouldn’t even turn on! But lo and behold it booted up to that famous Apple bong! noise. I squealed like a school girl. By god, I finally had a Mac! AND IT WAS FREE! I quickly plugged in the yellowed Apple Keyboard and from there daisy-chained the mouse into the keyboard. I even got to see the famous “Welcome!” video and set up an account. She had been nice enough to re-install OS X 10.5 on there for me. I set up my account and I was off into the wonderful world of OS X.
However there is a downside to this whole story. This computer is old. It came with 10.2.5 installed on the thing when it was originally purchased and it was not set to be running 10.5.8. But it did. I use it occasionally now, mostly to check my email in the morning as it sits right next to my bed.
And now, with the possibility of a Mac Mini looming on the horizon, I feel that my current desktop will be my last Windows machine. Possibly, forever. I’d love to get an iMac down the road, and obviously when you go to college you NEED a Macbook. But I feel Windows has died for me. I don’t think that anything that Microsoft can do will convince me to “go back” in the same way that Apple has convinced me to go to them.
What are your thoughts on the Mac vs. PC debacle? Which do you use? And which do you prefer if you’ve used both?
